## Image Caption

The Herodium, fortress and mausoleum of [Herod the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/Herod_the_Great/) (reign c. 75 – 4 BCE). The fortress was built on the Jebel Fureidis mountain, 11 km south of [Jerusalem](https://www.worldhistory.org/jerusalem/), and completed c. 15 BCE. It included a [palace](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/palace/) structure within its walls and a town at the foot of the mountain.
