Remains of the Dharmarajika [Stupa](https://www.worldhistory.org/stupa/). It was built over the relics of the [Buddha](https://www.worldhistory.org/Siddhartha_Gautama/) by [Ashoka](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ashoka_the_Great/) in the 3rd century BCE. It used to be a small circular structure, about 13.5 meters in diameter. It was pulled down during the 18th century CE on orders of a minister of the local king, and the materials used as building materials. During the destruction, a stone box with a green marble casket, thought to contain the relics, was found. The casket was thrown into the river [Ganges](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ganges/); the box is presently at the Indian Museum, Kolkata. Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/), 3rd century BCE.
