## Image Caption

Metropolis (Modern-day Torbali, [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/)) was a Greco-[Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) that was situated between two of the great [cities](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of antiquity, [Ephesus](https://www.worldhistory.org/ephesos/) and Smyrna. The city possibly dates back to the [Bronze Age](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Bronze_Age/) since there are [Hittite](https://www.worldhistory.org/hittite/) [hieroglyphics](https://www.worldhistory.org/Egyptian_Hieroglyphs/) that date to around that time. Although the city was founded in the 8th century BCE it did not flourish until the [Hellenistic period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenistic_Period/). The city at some point or another was under the control of the Pontic King [Mithridates VI](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mithridates_VI/), but then spent most of the 1st century BCE onward under Roman control. A [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) to the [Ares](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ares/), the [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) of [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/), lies somewhere within the defense walls of the city on the [acropolis](https://www.worldhistory.org/Acropolis/). The acropolis was surrounded by defense walls and sat above the [hellenistic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenic_World/) theater and [Roman baths](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Baths/) that can be seen today.
