## Image Caption

The personifications Hypnos (sleep) and [Thanatos](https://www.worldhistory.org/Thanatos/) ([death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/)) were either considered the sons or nurslings of [Nyx](https://www.worldhistory.org/Nyx/) (Night). This head is one of many versions of the same original. Hypnos appears with Thanatos on Classical vases, especially, lekythoi, but is rare in [sculpture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Sculpture/) until the late Classical/[Hellenistic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenic_World/) periods. From Civitella d'Arna near Perugia. [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) copy of a [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) original of about 325-275 BCE.
