## Image Caption

This is a marble statue of [Demeter](https://www.worldhistory.org/demeter/) seated on a throne. The lower arms are lost, together with the hands, at least one of which probably held a libation bowl or torch. The head was carved separately from the body. The goddess is portrayed as the model of [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) womanhood - serene, mature, motherly, and modestly veiled. A statue of her daughter [Persephone](https://www.worldhistory.org/persephone/) (now lost) was perhaps shown standing beside her. From the sanctuary of Demeter at Knidos, [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/). Circa 350-330 BCE. (The British Museum, London)
