## Image Caption

The [Sphinx](https://www.worldhistory.org/sphinx/) Gate at Alacahöyük (the site of a [Neolithic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Neolithic/) and [Hittite](https://www.worldhistory.org/hittite/) settlement in central [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/)) was built in the 14th century BCE. It was the south entrance of the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) and was fortified with towers. It was flanked by sphinx protomes sculpted in monolith stone. The sphinxes were the protectors of the city.
