The [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/)-built Cevlik tunnel in [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/). The 1.4 km (0.87 miles) tunnel was built to divert the floodwaters threatening the harbour of the ancient [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Seleuceia Pieria, and had inscriptions on the entrance, still visible today, that indicated that the tunnel started in 69 CE under [Vespasian](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vespasian/) and was completed by [Titus](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Titus/) in 81 CE.
