## Image Caption

Written in Babylonian in the [cuneiform](https://www.worldhistory.org/cuneiform/) inscription, this tablet lists the names and dates of several [Seleucid](https://www.worldhistory.org/Seleucid_Empire/) kings. After [Alexander](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Alexander/)'s [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/), the [Persian Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Persian_Empire/) fractured. [Mesopotamia](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mesopotamia/) and [Syria](https://www.worldhistory.org/syria/) became part of the [Seleucid Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Seleucid_Empire/), with their capital at Seleucia on the Tigris. During the 2nd century BCE, the eastern parts of this [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) were lost to local dynasts. The most important of these was based in [Parthia](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Parthia/), where [Mithradates](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mithradates/) established his capital at Nisa. From [Babylon](https://www.worldhistory.org/babylon/), Mesopotamia, Iraq. 2nd century BCE. (The British Museum, London)
