## Image Caption

Only the upper half of this granite statuette of a seated man has survived. The inscriptions on the back of the statuette read "offerings given of the king to [Bastet](https://www.worldhistory.org/Bastet/) mistress of Bast for the ka of \[...\]-bast born of the lady of the house Iry\[...\]". The inscriptions appear not to be written be earlier than the 25th Dynasty (from title and names); perhaps they were added to an [Old Kingdom](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Old_Kingdom/) statue. From [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/), precise provenance of excavation is unknown. Old Kingdom, circa 2686–2181 BCE.
