A portion of the fortifications at the site of [Mari](https://www.worldhistory.org/mari/), modern-day Tell Hariri, [Syria](https://www.worldhistory.org/syria/). Mari's fortifications entered their most advanced stage in the 19th century BCE when the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) and the rest of the region were under threat from [Amorite](https://www.worldhistory.org/amorite/) invaders. The walls were unsuccessful in this regard, however, as Mari fell to the Amorites c. 1830 BCE, thus ending the ruling Shakkanakku Dynasty and beginning the Amorite Lim Dynasty.
