## Image Caption

Reconstruction of the rampart of the circumvallation at Alesia (France). The rampart consisted of a terrace (agger) surmounted by a parapet and towers. The terrace was built up with packed earth extracted from trenches. It was protected by a wooden barrier and constituted the core of the rampart. Mounds of turf formed two walls, exterior and interior. The towers were spaced one every 18 - 20 m. They rested on a square of four supporting wood posts set about 3 m apart. The two front posts were solidly planted in the packed earth of the terrace.
