The [Gymnasium](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gymnasium/) of [Salamis](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Salamis/) in [Cyprus](https://www.worldhistory.org/cyprus/), with its columned palaestra, was built over the ruins of an earlier [Hellenistic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenic_World/) gymnasium in the 2nd century CE during [Trajan](https://www.worldhistory.org/trajan/) and [Hadrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/hadrian/)'s reign after Salamis had been greatly damaged in 116 CE during the Jewish revolt.
