## Image Caption

This red stone statue depicts Surasundari (or heavenly) beauty. The figure of the female was marvelously proportioned and bejeweled. The statue comes from the temples of [Khajuraho](https://www.worldhistory.org/Khajuraho/); Khajuraho has the largest number of [Hindu](https://www.worldhistory.org/hinduism/) and Jain temples in [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/). These temples were built between the 9th and 12th centuries CE by the Chandella dynasty. All of those temples were adorned with thousands of marvelous statues, like this one; many have an erotic tone.
