# Votive Stupa, Nalanda

## Image Caption
Nalanda was a revered center of learning and one of the oldest universities in the world. It was located in [Magadha](https://www.worldhistory.org/Magadha_Kingdom/), modern day Bihar, [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/), and it was operational between c. 300-1200 CE. Students from Tibet, [China](https://www.worldhistory.org/china/), Central Asia, and [Korea](https://www.worldhistory.org/Korea/). This image shows a part of a votive [stupa](https://www.worldhistory.org/stupa/) depicting [Buddha](https://www.worldhistory.org/Siddhartha_Gautama/) in various meditative postures. Most of the stupas and pillars like this were once covered with [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) patina, the remnants of which are vaguely discernible now.
