Following the fall of [Jerusalem](https://www.worldhistory.org/jerusalem/) in 70 CE, [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) Governor Flavius Silva dispatched Legion X Fretensis - a veteran military unit - to eliminate the remaining centre of Jewish resistance at [Masada](https://www.worldhistory.org/Masada/) in 72-73 CE. [Josephus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Flavius_Josephus/) describes that the Romans began the siege by building a [wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/) around the fortress to prevent escape, and posted sentinels to guard it. Excavations have uncovered a 2.5 mile circumvallation wall surrounding the desert fortress, as well as fifteen towers lining the eastern and northern stretches of the circumvallation wall, and eight camps. This image includes two of these camps which were laid down around the wall serving as bases and garrison points for the troops.
