[Mosaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mosaic/) depicting a charioteer and horse from each of the four [circus](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Circus/) factions (Red, White, Blue, and Green), 3rd century CE (Palazzo Massimo all Terme, [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/)). [Chariot](https://www.worldhistory.org/chariot/)-racing was the most popular sport in ancient Rome, and the Blues and Greens were the most popular factions. Emperors [Vitellius](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vitellius/) and [Caracalla](https://www.worldhistory.org/Caracalla/) both supported the Blues. But it is the Greens, first mentioned in 35 CE, who enjoyed the greatest popularity.
