Marble relief with female gladiators, from [Halicarnassus](https://www.worldhistory.org/halicarnassus/) (modern Bodrum, [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/)), 1st-2nd century CE.

The British Museum, London.

This marble relief commemorates the honourable release from service (missio) of two [women](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/women/) fighters, "[Amazon](https://www.worldhistory.org/amazon/)" (named after the female warriors) and "Achilia" (named after the [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) hero [Achilles](https://www.worldhistory.org/achilles/)). The inscription APELUTHESAN, "they were freed", indicates that they won their freedom after a series of outstanding performances. Heads of spectators can be seen on either side of the platform.
