## Image Caption

Reproduction of the 6th century CE Madaba [Mosaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mosaic/) depicting the map of [Jerusalem](https://www.worldhistory.org/jerusalem/). The Madaba Mosaic Map is part of a floor mosaic in the early [Byzantine](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Byzantine/) church of Saint George at Madaba, [Jordan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jordan/). It is a map of the Middle East. Part of it contains the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem. The mosaic inscription reads 'The sacred [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Jerusalem'.
