Statue of Silvanus, [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) of woods and wild fields, 1st century CE. (National Archaeological Museum of Spain, Madrid) As fertility god he is the protector of herds and cattle and is associated with Faunus. He shows many similarities with the [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) [Pan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Pan/). The first fruits of the fields were offered to him, as well as meat and wine. His attributes are a pruning knife and a bough from a pine tree.
