Before entering this columbarium, which is in the garden of the residence of the British Amabassador to [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/), I had to sign a waiver to the effect that I would not hold HM Government responsible for any mishap. And from the state of the staircase, on which I inched downwards in a sitting position, I was able to see clearly the necessity for such a waiver. The columbarium itself is fascinating, because two stories are located underground. The reticulated brick work, from which the stucco has crumbled, reveals the chamber to be the work of the first century CE.
