A stretch of the Via Egnatia in [Philippi](https://www.worldhistory.org/Philippi/) ([Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/)). The Via Egnatia crossed the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) provinces of Illyricum, Macedonia, and Thrace, running through territory that is now part of modern Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Greece, and European [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/). It was built by a Roman senator Gnaeus Egnatius, who served as [praetor](https://www.worldhistory.org/praetor/) with the powers of proconsul in the newly conquered province of Macedonia in the late 140s BCE.
