[Hagia Sophia](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hagia_Sophia/) was built as a church by Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles who were chosen as architects by the [Byzantine Emperor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Byzantine_Emperor/) Justinian. Hagia Sophia (meaning "holy wisdom") was completed in 537 BCE and was transformed into a mosque in 1453 CE when the Ottomans conquered the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/). It has been museum since 1935 CE.
