## Image Caption

The [cuneiform](https://www.worldhistory.org/cuneiform/) inscriptions on the back of this small diorite statue (height 18 cm) read, "Dedicated to the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) Ningizzida, his god, by [Ur](https://www.worldhistory.org/ur/)-ningirsu, priest-prince of Lagash, son of Gudea, priest-prince of Lagash." This bearded man is Ur-ningirsu. The mouth and the nose appear to be damaged on purpose. Probably, Ur-ningirsu dedicated this statuette of himself to the [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) of Ningizzida. Ningizzida was the [Sumerian](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sumerians/) god of the underworld and the guardian of the gate of heaven. Neo-Sumerian period, 2117 BCE. From southern [Mesopotamia](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mesopotamia/), Iraq. (The [Pergamon](https://www.worldhistory.org/pergamon/) Museum, Berlin).
