## Image Caption

This commemorative basalt stele depicts the Assyrian king [Esarhaddon](https://www.worldhistory.org/Esarhaddon/) worshiping gods and symbols of gods. The king's left hand holds a royal mace and two ropes. These ropes pass through the lips of two captives. The kneeling smaller figure appears to an [Egyptian](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Egyptian/) crown prince, while the larger standing man is a Syrian [city-state](https://www.worldhistory.org/Polis/) governor. There are [cuneiform](https://www.worldhistory.org/cuneiform/) inscriptions on the front side of the stele which narrate the victorious military campaigns of Esarhaddon. From the citadal of Sam'al/Zincirli, modern [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/). 671 BCE. (The [Pergamon](https://www.worldhistory.org/pergamon/) Museum, Berlin).
