National Archaeological Museum, [Athens](https://www.worldhistory.org/Athens/), 215. 330-20 BCE. This relief slab is one of four that made up the revetment of a pedestal (only three survive), and was found at Mantineia, Arcadia. The pedestal either acted as a base for a statue group of the Delian [trinity](https://www.worldhistory.org/Trinity/) ([Leto](https://www.worldhistory.org/Leto/), [Apollo](https://www.worldhistory.org/apollo/), and [Artemis](https://www.worldhistory.org/artemis/)) or as an altar. On this relief the musical agon between Apollo and [Marsyas](https://www.worldhistory.org/Marsyas/) is depicted. Apollo sits at left with his [kithara](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kithara/), listening to Marsyas, at right, playing his auloi. At centre is the [Scythian](https://www.worldhistory.org/Scythians/) who will punish Marsyas for loosing the agon by flaying him; his knife is held ready in his right hand.
