## Image Caption

Foundation figure of King [Shulgi of Ur](https://www.worldhistory.org/Shulgi_of_Ur/) carrying a basket, [copper](https://www.worldhistory.org/copper/), c. 2094–2047 BCE. Foundation figures were buried in the foundations of a [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) and show the king carrying building materials for the temple. Building and restoring temples was a pious act expected of Mesopotamian kings of this period.
