The Nijmegen [Roman cavalry](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Cavalry/) helmet, an iron mask sheathed in [bronze](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/bronze/) and [silver](https://www.worldhistory.org/Silver/) discovered in 1915 CE near Nijmegen (Netherlands), second half of the first century CE. (Museum het Valkhof, Nijmegen) According to [Arrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/Arrian/) of Nicomedia, face mask helmets were used in cavalry parades and sporting mock battles called “hippika gymnasia”.
