## Image Caption
The Intihuatana Stone or 'Hitching Post of the Sun' at [Machu Picchu](https://www.worldhistory.org/Machu_Picchu/) in the High Andes. The stone was used by [Inca](https://www.worldhistory.org/Inca_Civilization/) priests for astronomical observations, especially of the sun. In ceremonies during the solstices the priests symbollically tied the sun to the stone using a sacred cord.
