A detail from the celebrated [Portland Vase](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/654/the-portland-vase/), one of the finest examples of [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) glassware. The vase was made during the reign of [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/) (27 BCE - 14 CE) and displays gemcutting techniques used to create a cameo-like depiction of the marriage of Peleus and [Thetis](https://www.worldhistory.org/Thetis/) from [Greek mythology](https://www.worldhistory.org/Greek_Mythology/). (British Museum, London).
