The basement halls of [Diocletian](https://www.worldhistory.org/Diocletian/)'s [Palace](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/palace/) were originally the supporting structures of the [Roman emperor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Emperor/)'s residential quarters. They reflect the layout of the upper floor halls. Diocletian's Palace (Split, Croatia) was built at the turn of the fourth century CE.
