The Arch of [Alexander Severus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Alexander_Severus/) is a [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) [triumphal arch](https://www.worldhistory.org/Triumphal_Arch/) located in [Dougga](https://www.worldhistory.org/Dougga/) Tunisia (ancient Thugga). The arch was built in 228 CE, in gratitude to the emperor for his beneficence towards the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/). It functioned as one of the city gates, at the end of a road linking to the road between [Carthage](https://www.worldhistory.org/carthage/) and Tébessa.
