Ancient [Egyptian](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Egyptian/) royal burials were designed to preserve the [pharaoh](https://www.worldhistory.org/pharaoh/)'s body, identity, and status for the afterlife. Coffins, funerary texts, jewelry, weapons, furniture, food, shabtis, and other [grave](https://www.worldhistory.org/burial/) goods surrounded the deceased with both ritual protection and immense material wealth. That wealth also made royal tombs irresistible targets: most were robbed in antiquity, reused, damaged, or deliberately emptied when royal mummies were moved to safer [burial](https://www.worldhistory.org/burial/) caches.

Against this background, the substantially intact burials of four pharaohs are exceptional:

1. **[Tutankhamun](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tutankhamun/) – 18th Dynasty, Valley of the Kings** – discovered by Howard Carter in 1922, [tomb](https://www.worldhistory.org/tomb/) KV62 had suffered limited ancient robbery but still preserved the king, his nested coffins, and more than 5,000 funerary objects largely together.
2. **Psusennes I – 21st Dynasty, Tanis** – discovered by Pierre Montet in 1940, his undisturbed burial contained an extraordinary assemblage including a [silver](https://www.worldhistory.org/Silver/) coffin, [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) funerary mask, jewelry, vessels, and other royal equipment.
3. **Amenemope – 21st Dynasty, Tanis** – found within the royal necropolis at Tanis, his burial preserved the king together with his coffins, funerary mask, jewelry, and substantial burial equipment despite having been relocated in antiquity.
4. **Shoshenq II – 22nd Dynasty, Tanis** – discovered in 1939 within the tomb complex of Psusennes I, his intact burial contained a distinctive silver falcon-headed coffin, gold mask, jewelry, and other funerary objects.

Together, these rare burials preserve something most Egyptian royal tombs cannot: the ruler and a major funerary assemblage still associated in their archaeological context. Spanning more than a millennium, from the [New Kingdom](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/New_Kingdom/) to the [Third Intermediate Period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Third_Intermediate_Period_of_Egypt/), they provide exceptional evidence for changing ideas of royal identity, burial practice, craftsmanship, wealth, and the protection of the dead in ancient [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/).
