Lucius Aelius was [Hadrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/hadrian/)’s first intended successor. Aelius was the son of a powerful senatorial family. He served as [consul](https://www.worldhistory.org/Consul/) in 136 CE and was officially adopted by Hadrian as his heir in 137 CE. However Aelius died before Hadrian on January 1st, 138 CE of tuberculosis. Hadrian was, therefore, forced to choose a new heir; [Antoninus Pius](https://www.worldhistory.org/Antoninus_Pius/).
