The Seven Years' [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) (1756-1763) was a major European and global conflict driven by the rivalry between Austria and Prussia over Silesia and between Great [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/) and France over colonial possessions, [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/), and imperial influence. The Diplomatic Revolution of 1756 overturned traditional alliances: Britain aligned with Prussia, while Austria joined France, supported at different stages by Russia, Sweden, Saxony, and other powers. [Frederick II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Frederick_II/)'s invasion of Saxony opened the European war, although fighting between Britain and France had already begun in North America in 1754.

The conflict combined major campaigns in Central [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/), the German states, and the Baltic with [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) across North America, the Caribbean, West [Africa](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/africa/), and Asia. The Treaties of [Paris](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/paris/) and Hubertusburg (1763) ended the war, leaving most European borders intact. Prussia retained Silesia and strengthened its standing as a European great power, while Britain acquired Canada and expanded its overseas influence, particularly in [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/). The war reshaped the global balance of power, while its financial burdens and imperial consequences contributed to tensions that would help precipitate the [American Revolution](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Revolution/).
