This imaginative rendering of [Abraham Lincoln](https://www.worldhistory.org/Abraham_Lincoln/) composing the Emancipation Proclamation depicts the president surrounded by symbolic references to American political and intellectual history. On 1 January 1863, in the midst of the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/), the proclamation would be issued, declaring all persons held as slaves in the secessionist states to be free.
