# Lloyd Tilghman

Lloyd Tilghman was a Confederate general during the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/), playing significant roles at the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Fort Henry on 06 February 1862 and, shortly after, at the Battle of Fort Donelson on 16 - 18 February, both of which were defeats for the Confederate army.
After the latter, Tilghman was subsequently taken prisoner, where he remained until later in the year when he was exchanged for a Union general. He played a further role in the [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) at the Battle of Champion's Hill on 16 May 1863, where he was fatally struck in the chest by a shell fragment.
