Andrew H. Foote was born on 02 September 1806 in Connecticut, and he joined the US Navy in 1822, quickly rising through the ranks.

He was a Union flag officer during the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/) who became widely known following his naval victory over Confederate opposition at the [Battle of Fort Henry](https://www.worldhistory.org/Battle_of_Fort_Henry/) in February 1862. He continued to play a prominent role in the [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/), notably during the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Fort Donelson and the Battle of Island Number Ten.

Foote died from Bright's disease (kidney disease) on 26 June 1863 at the Astor Hotel in New York [City](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/).
