The forum of Nicopolis ad Istrum, Bulgaria. The paved square was surrounded by an Ionic colonnade and contained pedestals for marble and [bronze](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/bronze/) statues of emperors and members of the imperial family. Shops occupied its eastern and southern sides, while a large building on the north probably served as a civic basilica in Late Antiquity. The forum was situated slightly east of the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) centre.
