The Roman Theatre of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv), Bulgaria, was built in the late 1st century CE between two of the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/)'s hills. It features seating and a stage that overlook the lower city and the Rhodope Mountains. The theatre could accommodate about 6,000 spectators and hosted theatrical performances, public assemblies, and gladiatorial spectacles.
