Front page of the *Charelston Mercury* newspaper covering news in December 1860 that South Carolina had voted to secede from the United States of America. This action would trigger the Secession Crisis of 1860-61 which would, in turn, lead to the formation of the Confederate States of America and, ultimately, to the [American Civil War](https://www.worldhistory.org/American_Civil_War/) (1861-65).
