A photograph showing US Marines and their trained dogs during the [battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Guam, in the Mariana Islands, which took place in July and August 1944 during the Pacific [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) of the Second World War (1939-45). Dogs were used in the Pacific War to sniff out hidden enemy soliders and mines, amongst other duties like guarding camps at night.
