The Church of Cristo de la Luz is one of the few monuments in Toledo where the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/)’s various historical phases can be observed. The earliest remains date from the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) period and include a stone quarry and a paved street dating to the 1st century CE. During the Islamic period, in the 10th century CE, a mosque known as *Bab al-Mardum* was constructed on the site. Following the Christian [conquest](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) of Toledo by Alfonso VI in 1085 CE, the mosque was converted into a church. During the 12th century CE, the building was expanded with the addition of a transept and an apse, as well as a small cemetery. Today, the former church has been deconsecrated and functions as a historic monument and a site open to visitors.
