Shown here is Kim Il-Sung, who would go on to become the first leader of North [Korea](https://www.worldhistory.org/Korea/) from 1949 until his [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) in 1994. In the background you can see the flag of the People’s Republic of Korea, which was used before Korea became divided.
Kim Il-Sung first earned notoriety opposing Japanese imperialism within Korea and instead promoting Marxism-Leninism. Following WWII he later pursued his goals of reunifying North and South Korea, leading to the start of the Korean [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/), and over his career, ultimately cemented the rule of North Korea’s Communist Party, which is the sole controller of the state to this day.
