[Odysseus](https://www.worldhistory.org/odysseus/), the legendary king of Ithaca, belongs to the [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) Heroic Age, traditionally associated with the [Trojan War](https://www.worldhistory.org/Trojan_War/) near the end of the Late [Bronze Age](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Bronze_Age/) (conventionally c. 13th–12th centuries BCE). His story moves through three connected arenas of authority: the royal household, the Achaean coalition at [Troy](https://www.worldhistory.org/troy/), and the wider maritime world. In the [Iliad](https://www.worldhistory.org/iliad/), Odysseus is valued less for overwhelming strength than for persuasive speech, political judgment, and mētis, adaptive or cunning intelligence. In the [Odyssey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Odyssey/), his return tests whether a ruler can recover his identity, family, and legitimate authority after twenty years of separation. His homecoming is therefore not merely personal: it represents the restoration of dynastic, political, and social order on Ithaca.

The traditions surrounding Odysseus developed over many centuries rather than forming a single fixed biography. The Iliad and Odyssey emerged from long traditions of oral performance and reached recognizable form during the [Archaic Period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Archaic_Period/) (c. eighth–early seventh century BCE). Lost poems of the Epic Cycle (c. seventh–sixth century BCE), Athenian tragedies (fifth century BCE), and later mythographers expanded his youth, Trojan career, later kingship, and [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/). These changing interpretations transformed Odysseus into a vehicle for examining the tensions between cunning and honour, fame (kleos) and homecoming (nostos), human agency and divine power, and public achievement and private responsibility.
