# Bisagra Gate in Toledo

The Bisagra Gate (Spanish: *La* *Puerta de Bisagra*), also known as the New Bisagra Gate, is a monumental entrance located on the northern side of the walled [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Toledo. The origin and age of this door may be from the Arab or Mudejar period. It was rebuilt around 1550 CE and the works were finally completed in 1576 CE. The present gate reflects a fully developed Renaissance style. Its central passage is designed as a classical [triumphal arch](https://www.worldhistory.org/Triumphal_Arch/), featuring a semicircular arch constructed with rusticated stone blocks. Above the arch is the coat of arms of the “Imperial City,” displaying the double-headed eagle flanked by the Pillars of [Hercules](https://www.worldhistory.org/hercules/) bearing the motto “*Plus Ultra*”, associated with Charles V, Holy [Roman Emperor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Emperor/). This is crowned by a triangular pediment with acroteria at its corners and a guardian angel at the apex. The gateway is flanked by two large semicircular towers built of masonry, decorated with a broad band of rusticated stone arranged in a checkerboard pattern, reinforcing both its defensive character and its monumental appearance.
