# The Toledo Gate in Ciudad Real

The Toledo Gate (Spanish: *La* *Puerta de Toledo*) in Ciudad Real is a significant example of military [architecture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/architecture/) dating to the 13th–14th centuries . Its construction was initiated under King Alfonso X of Castile (also known as the Wise) in 1255 and was completed in 1328 during the reign of Alfonso XI (called the Avenger). It is the only surviving gate of the seven that once formed part of the medieval walls enclosing the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/). The gate also functioned as a customs point on the route between Toledo and Seville, where duties were collected from goods and travelers. Architecturally, the structure is built in a Gothic-Mudéjar style. The gate has a roughly square plan and is composed of three main sections: two rectangular flanking towers, each approximately 12 meters (39.37 ft) in height and 4 meters (13.12 ft) in width, connected by a central body.
