Photograph of Admiral Yamamoto, commander of [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/)'s Combined Fleet during the Second World [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/), reviewing war plans. His reservations about attacking the United States are well known, famously having said Japan would awaken a "sleeping [giant](https://www.worldhistory.org/Giants/)" if war broke out. He felt the only course of action was to plan a sneak attack on the US Navy in the Pacific and force the Americans to the negotiating table.
