This official portrait of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto depicts him in his ceremonial Imperial Japanese Naval attire. He served as the commander of [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/)'s Combined Fleet during the Second World [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) and took part in the Pearl Harbor, Midway, and Guadalcanal campaigns. Yamamoto was killed when his plane was shot down by the US Air Force in 1943.
