## Image Caption

Winged [Nike](https://www.worldhistory.org/nike/) relief, photograph by Juan Ángel Piqueras, [Ephesus](https://www.worldhistory.org/ephesos/), Selçuk, İzmir, Türkiye, 2 March 2026.

This marble relief of the [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) goddess of victory Nike (known to the Romans as Victoria) is dated to the 1st-2nd century CE. The relief is displayed on the west side of [Domitian](https://www.worldhistory.org/domitian/) Square at [Ephesus](https://www.worldhistory.org/ephesos/), to the left of the upper section of Curetes Street. It originally formed one of the spandrels of the arch above the so-called [Hercules](https://www.worldhistory.org/hercules/) Gate and was likely paired with a symmetrical Nike figure on the opposite side. The piece is generally considered to have been reused from an earlier monument and incorporated into the gateway during the 4th century CE. Nike is shown in flight, extending a laurel wreath in her left hand to crown a victor, while holding a palm branch in her right, symbols of [triumph](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Triumph/) in both athletic and military contexts.
