This illustration, depicting the downhill ride of Colonel Frederick W. Lander of the Union army during the Battle of Philippi (Philippi Races) on 3 June 1861, was published in the periodical *Leslie's Weekly* (also known as *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper*). The image became the most famous depiction of the battle after it was published in 1861.
